Divided Life Synopsis

It is about the struggle, the inner pain of the poor in post-independence Migembe country. The offspring of freedom fighters struggle for economic independence.

They are barely able to educate their children from the meagre wages they earn from a few plantation owners whose parents did not participate in the freedom struggle. Realizing the struggle of their parents, their children boycott working in the plantations in protest of the ill treatment accorded to them and their parents, choosing instead to migrate to the capital city. The struggle continues…urban exploitation is real! The class division that exist in the village still reflect in the city. They, too, struggle to educate their children. It is not until their educated children defy all odds and come together in a unity of purpose that hope shines on Migembe.

These learned children represent a generation that does not judge one based on their socioeconomic or political status. This generation is led by Kende, a journalist who when in line of duty witnessed a poor protester (Juhudi) die while leading a demonstration of retrenched workers to demand their long-delayed terminal benefits from their former employer. In his dying moment during media interview with Kende, Juhudi asked the journalist: “All I am asking is, how will you help my son to understand it was not fault?” Kende surged forward and held his interviewee.

The expression in his face was heartbreaking as he placed the body of Juhudi on the placard. Suddenly, everything was quiet…no chanting, no drumming, and… no nothing.
